Training Program

The Future of Nova Scotia’s Forestry Workforce Starts Here

The forestry industry is facing a major challenge: a shrinking pool of skilled manual workers. Many people are interested in this line of work, but the barriers to entry — equipment costs, piece-rate pay, and lack of hands-on mentorship — prevent new operators from getting the training they need to succeed.

We designed our training program to change that.

Why Our Program Exists

For more than a decade, the number of trained operators entering manual silviculture has steadily declined. This shortage makes forest management more difficult, increases pressure on existing workers, and impacts long-term sustainability.

We believe the solution is simple:
Create a safe, accessible pathway into forestry that supports workers from day one.

What Makes Our Training Program Different

✔ Paid-While-Learning Model

Trainees earn an hourly wage throughout the training period — eliminating financial stress and allowing them to focus on learning safely and effectively.

✔ 600+ Hours of Hands-On Training

Each trainee receives extensive field instruction tailored to their pace, experience level, and learning style.

✔ One-on-One Mentorship

We match each trainee with an experienced operator who provides direct guidance, real-time feedback, and ongoing support.

✔ All Equipment Provided

Brush saws, protective gear, safety equipment — everything is supplied. Trainees never have to invest their own money to start.

✔ A Clear Pathway to Employment

Our retention rate speaks for itself: Over 2:1 compared to typical industry averages for new hires. Trainees walk away with skills, confidence, and long-term career potential.

Who the Program Is For

  • Youth ages 16–30

  • Career changers

  • Students exploring forestry

  • Parents, teachers, and guidance staff wanting safe opportunities for young people

  • Anyone interested in hands-on, outdoor, meaningful work

You don’t need prior experience — just a good attitude, willingness to learn, and respect for safety.

How the Training Works

1. Screening & Selection

We identify individuals with the right mindset, work ethic, and interest in forestry.

2. Paid Instruction

Training begins immediately with paid, hourly compensation.

3. One-on-One Mentorship

Trainees work side-by-side with experienced operators who walk them through techniques, safety, spacing, saw handling, and forest assessment.

4. Field Training (600+ Hours)

Hands-on experience across multiple blocks prepares trainees for real forestry work.

5. Certification & Transition

Once trainees demonstrate competence in PCT and ECC, they are ready to move into long-term, well-paying forestry careers.
